A few things to note...

  • Tomorrow is our field trip to the Cobb Youth Museum.
  • Tomorrow students may dress down for $1.
  • Tomorrow we are going to be doing some "winter cleaning". Please have students bring their backpacks, there will be things coming home.
  • If your child brings home a retake for math, it will be accompanied by practice work. Remember that in order to participate in a retake, the practice work must be done and the initial assessment signed by a parent. Our math retake will be the Thursday that we return, so that we can be sure to get the updated grade in for this marking period.
  • Please have students read and practice their multiplication facts using Mathletics or Front Row over the break.  This is not an official homework assignment, but the practice will benefit them.
  • Last, but not least, thank you to all who made our classroom celebration awesome! Whether you donated items or donated your time, it is all greatly appreciated. The kids had a ton of fun!

We want to wish all of you a safe and wonderful holiday season. Whether you are traveling or staying local, we hope that you get to enjoy time with loved ones. We will see everyone next year!
A Few Quick notes about the week:
* Our field trip is Wednesday to the Cobb Youth Museum.
*Our class holiday party is Tuesday.

Math- Division. Finding whole number quotients with remainders. (4NBT6)

Social Studies- Colonial Life (4H2b, 4H3 a-b)

Students will be receiving information about a project that will be due on Dec 16th. They will receive the following information and a rubric to bring home.
Design an Elf Trap
It’s that time of year when little elves sneak around and try to sneak all the sweet treats! But they are not going to get yours this year…you are going to design a trap to catch them!
Most people believe that elves are the size of mice, so your trap doesn’t have to be very big.  They are attracted to any kind of sweet treat and love things that sparkle.
You are free to design your trap any way you’d like, but there are a few requirements.
Requirements:
·        It must have at least one simple machine in it’s design. (inclined plane, screw, wedge, wheel & axle, lever, and/or pulley)
·        You must draw a diagram of your trap, including labels of what items you will need to build your trap and the simple machine(s) that are used.
·        It should be neat and colorful.
·        You must also write a descriptive paragraph, detailing how your trap works. Include in your paragraph:
o   The name of your trap
o   The materials needed to build your trap
o   The step by step directions of how your trap works
o   What simple machine(s) you used in your trap
o   How the simple machine(s) you used made the trap work more easily

IT IS NOT A REQUIREMENT THAT YOU BUILD YOUR SIMPLE MACHINE, BUT IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO AND BRING IT IN, THAT WOULD BE FUN TO SEE!

All projects are due Friday Decemebr 16th. Late projects will not be accepted.
This is an AT HOME project and will not be worked on in class.

Friday, December 2, 2016

We hope to see everyone at Winterfest this Saturday from 4:00 – 8:00.   Please come and join the fun!!

The Santa Shop will be open for our class to shop on Tuesday Dec 6th.

Please make sure that your child is studying their multiplication facts at home. As we continued today to multiply two digit by two digit and 3-4 digit by 1 digit numbers, we noticed that most errors were based on basic multiplication fact errors and not with the actual methods (box method etc).

On Tuesday, December 6th, we will have a Social Studies Assessment (Part 1) on the colonies. Students are to study the brochure that is glued in their Social Studies journals, and also the placement of where the 13 colonies are located. They will be asked to fill in a blank map of the colonies and be asked questions that are created using the information from the brochure. Please make sure that they study this weekend.  Students were reminded to bring home their journals as they were packing up today.  We will be learning even more about the colonies next week, and will have Part 2 assessment towards the end of next week.

Holiday Celebration:
We will be having a holiday celebration in our class on Tuesday, December 20th. More details will be sent to you through our homeroom parents.

We have our field trip to the Cobb Youth Museum on Wednesday Dec. 21st. Please return all donations and permission slips by Friday December 16th.

Please return all Progress Reports that went home before Thanksgiving break, ASAP.

Reminder to please check your child's folders and homework daily. If they have a retake assessment that they are having the opportunity to redo, please make sure that they complete the additional practice assignment, you sign, and the student returns it by the deadline noted. Please also remember that make up's are only offered on assessments, not classwork grades and only for grades 69% or below.

In the beginning of the year, you received a paper that asked you to indicate how your child will be going home in the event of inclement weather. Some students will be receiving new forms so that updated information can be noted. Please remember that in the event that school is dismissed early due to inclement weather, there will be no ASP, therefore you must indicate the bus that your child will need to ride home.  This information can be found at:

This week we will be learning:

Writing- Continue creating a rough and final draft of a personal narrative (4W3, 4W3b)

Word Work- There will be no spelling words this week, due to the additional writing homework that will be coming home.
Social Studies- Colonial Life (4H2b, 4H3 a-b)

***Multiplication Masters- Knowledge of multiplication facts is very important in this quarter. We have implemented an incentive program in class where students can "test out" in the mornings. They can sign up in the morning when they enter class and if they feel as though they have mastered certain facts, they can "test out". For example, if a student wants to test on their 5's, we will ask them facts based on their 5 times tables in random order. If they are fluent in their correct answers, then they will be marked off as having completed them. The students who have mastered all facts by the end of January (exact date will be announced) then they qualify for a multiplication celebration!  Please continue to encourage your children to study at home.

Tonight's Math Homework
The homework tonight has a tutorial side which shows standard algorithm for solving multiplication. We have not taught this method, but have taught area model, distributive with partial product and box method. All of which can be found in your child's math journal. Please have them use one of the methods we have taught to complete tonight's homework. Sorry for the confusion.

Outside Recess
I am sure that you have seen the news and been outside. There have also  been a few weather advisories regarding the smoke in the air. Today and until it clears up a bit, we will be having indoor recess. I just don't feel comfortable having the kids outside running around and breathing in all the smoke in the air.

Please read...
Parents, please be sure that you read your child's agenda very carefully everyday. If they have written that they have a vocabulary or spelling test to study for (such as their previous science, word sort and social studies tests) please make sure that you physically see what they have brought home to study. We have had some friends whose agendas indicate that they have studied (parent signature) but then the students have lost what it was that they were supposed to have been studying the whole week. Thus resulting in test grades that do not reflect what I know their abilities are. I am always willing to replace study guides etc, but if moments before the test come and they are given the opportunity to study and they tell me that they haven't had one of their resources all week, it raises the question as to if they actually completed the homework assignments. Please also be sure to check their purple folders for tests that come home, in which a retake is being offered. Additionally, please check ParentVue for grades. If you see an assessment grade that is less than a 69%, you will know to be on the look out for a retake paper for you to sign and a practice assignment for your child to complete and return before the deadline date noted. As always, I greatly appreciate your continued support and the work that you do with your children to help them be successful. I feel privileged to be able to work with your children and with you.
